What is a web address/domain?
Your domain name (web address) is your Internet identity or your online brand. Your customers will remember this name and use it to find your Web site, products or services. And since no two parties can ever hold the same domain (web address) at the same time, your Internet identity is totally unique.

The endings .com and .net are called SUFFIXES.
Every country controls different suffixes. This is why British suffixes end with .uk, French in .fr, Germans in .de etc. You have probably seen the suffix .co.uk previously.

Using the words "my business" as an example, you might want to call your domain "mybusiness.co.uk".

Web addresses (domains) ending in the suffixes .com, .net, org, .biz and .info are international choices.

What is the difference between a web address and a domain?
Both terms describe exactly the same See "What is a web address/domain"?

What characters can I use when registering a web address?
You can use the characters a-z and 0-9 (in any combination). You can also use hyphens (-), although your domain name cannot start or end with a hyphen. You cannot use any other characters, nor should you use punctuation.

Can I register a web address containing only numbers?
Yes!

Rules for .uk web addresses
Please note that two letter names are not allowed, but two character names are allowed
i.e. 3x.co.uk where the format is not aa.foo.uk.

.ltd.uk

There are strict criteria applied to registering .ltd.uk web addresses

Unlimited companies Registered under the Companies Act, unincorporated bodies, partnerships and bodies incorporated under other legislation are not eligible for an entry in ltd.uk

Your web address must be exactly the same as listed at Companies House, http://companieshouse.org.uk. The ampersand (&) character must be replaced by the word "and".

Your company number and name must match. If your company registered in Scotland or Northern Ireland, it must have a prefix of SCor NI.

Nominet will check with the English Companies House

Certain words will be removed from the Registered company name where they occur at the end of the name: "limited", " public limited company" and the Welsh Language versions ("cyfyngedig" and "cwmni cyfyngedig cyhoeddus") along with the abbreviations of these words: ltd, cyf and ccc

All .ltd.uk registrations will take longer than other domain registrations (typically a day or two).

Rules for .biz, .com, .info, .net and .org domains

Allowed characters: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789- (domains are case-insensitive). Names are not allowed to start or end with a hyphen. Names must be within 3 and 63 characters long (not including the .biz, .com, .info, .net or .org suffix).

Someone else has registerd the domain I wanted, what can I do?
You can offer to buy the name off its current owner, or look for an alternative domain name. If your company holds a trademark on the terms in the domain name, it may be worth seeking legal advice about the possibility of recovering your domain name.
