What you need to set up Broadband

You will need a BT standard telephone line.

To get Broadband you have to have a standard BT line ending in the main socket, a small white plastic square box with a socket in the front cover. You probably already have one of these at home. If you don't, call BT to have a telephone line installed into your building.

Please check the link to find out which BT services are incompatible with the installation of Broadband. A list of Incompatible services is available here.

You will need to be within reasonable distance (around 3.5km) of an Broadband enabled BT telephone exchange. If you are further away the signal strength will be dropping.

1 A standard BT line service is always set up at the main or first socket. This is the socket you have to use to install your Broadband connection. You can have other extensions from there, but if there are too many some will have to be disabled.

2 A normal power supply so that your new Broadband kit can be powered (No service without power).

3 A connection to your computer equipment – either via an RJ45 standard LAN (Local Area Network), or an active USB port of a PC (note that some older PCs have USB ports but they are not active).

4 And a computer of course

Also make sure that your computer equipment is relatively close together. The power supply should be within 3ft of the phone socket, so should the connecting LAN socket or USB port.

Do you need an Broadband modem or router?
An external USB modem is the most common option. For several computers or a network, we advise you to get an Ethernet Router.
